Interlibrary Loan Service
The Interlibrary Loan (ILL) service enables HPU students, faculty, and staff to borrow materials unavailable at the HPU Library.
The HPU Library and Learning Commons follow all copyright laws and use the Commission on New Technological Uses of Copyrighted Works [CONTU] published guidelines to source all print and electronic materials, we will first attempt to secure these materials from resource sharing partners at no cost to the patron. However, if such attempts are unsuccessful, we will then ask the patron’s permission to explore options for securing the material at a cost to the patron.
Because ILL requests may involve an investment of time and/or money on the requestor's part, it is recommended that you first utilize the print and electronic resources available in the HPU Library and Learning Commons. Please consult with one of our reference librarians (reference@hpu.edu or 808-544-1133) during the course of your research so that we may help you locate resources that may have been overlooked.
How Do I Place an ILL Request?
Search
If HPU does not have the book or article you want, please use the following forms to place a request:
Books usually take 2-4 weeks to arrive, and articles usually arrive in 1-2 weeks. Factors affecting delivery time include the location of the lending institution and the availability of the requested material, workloads both here and at the lending libraries, and the delivery service used. Please be sure to give yourself adequate time to receive requests.
The HPU Library will look for and utilize free options for ILL requests whenever possible. On the rare occasion that a free option is not available, the average cost is $10.00 - $20.00 per item. Unless patrons specify on their request forms that they are willing to pay a certain amount, library staff will not request items with fees before communicating the cost to the patron, and the patron has agreed to pay.
Users are responsible for paying all ILL fees that may accompany items they have requested (whether or not materials are picked up). Please refer to our Interlibrary Loan Policy [PDF] for more information.
The Copyright Law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted materials. Under certain conditions specified in the law, Libraries and Archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproductions. One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is “not to be used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship or research.” If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of “fair use,” that user may be liable for copyright infringement. This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law.
By submitting any ILL request, you acknowledge and agree to all terms and conditions of the Interlibrary Loan Policy [PDF].
