These images are based on drawings of the monkeypods on the Honolulu Hale campus. The monkeypod spreads its large canopy with curved trunks and snaking branches. It creates urban shade wherever it has been planted, making life pleasant in urban Honolulu.
These large scale woodcuts of monkeypods start with a flat layer of carbon grey ink defining the shape of the tree. By adding multiple green layers of leaves, I complete the image of a tree, making a gallery forest.
This forest of large carbon trees asks us to think about the many roles of trees: carbon reduction, regeneration, shade, restoration, resilience, renewal. The green of the leaves further acknowledges the role of trees in cooling our urban environment and reducing summer heat waves.
These prints do not explain or teach, but provoke us to rethink how we see trees.
