BEGIN:VCALENDAR PRODID:-//HH//NONSGML Cascade Server//EN VERSION:2.0 X-WR-CALNAME:Art Gallery Show - Urban Canopy: Looking at Trees - Laura Smith X-WR-TIMEZONE:Pacific/Honolulu X-WR-CALDESC:This exhibition has presented me with an opportunity to think visually about how trees significantly contribute to\, and change our liv es. Of special interest to me are urban trees. These images are based o n drawings of the monkeypods on the Honolulu Hale campus. The monkeypod sp reads its large canopy with curved trunks and snaking branches. It creates urban shade wherever it has been planted\, making life pleasant in urban Honolulu. These large scale woodcuts of monkeypods start with a flat la yer of carbon grey ink defining the shape of the tree. By adding multiple green layers of leaves\, I complete the image of a tree\, making a gallery forest. This forest of large carbon trees asks us to think about the m any roles of trees: carbon reduction\, regeneration\, shade\, restoration\ , resilience\, renewal. The green of the leaves further acknowledges the r ole of trees in cooling our urban environment and reducing summer heat wav es. These prints do not explain or teach\, but provoke us to rethink ho w we see trees.
