The Leaders and the Led Prize is awarded to the best student papers, undergraduate and graduate, which explore how people become agents of, or opponents of change; have advanced the arts and science, and or led or opposed social and political movements that have shaped or are shaping the world we live in.

This year, the award goes to Alexa J. Ghioca, an undergraduate,  for her paper,
“Bernice Pauahi Bishop: A Princess’s Legacy and Her Stewards.” Bishop's impact on education and cultural preservation in Hawai'i cannot be overstated, her philanthropy has inspired and shaped the community generations later. This paper focuses on the women who have continued her work across every aspect of society: Mary Kawena Pukui (Pakui), Emma Nāwahī, and Haunani-Kay Trask.

Ghioca is a senior pursuing a BA in International Studies with a concentration in International Relations and Security.

The Leaders and Led Prize competition was created, and its prizes provided by HPU Professor of History Emeritus Marc Jason Gilbert, Ph.D.
