HPU is delighted to announce a significant achievement by HPU Associate Professor and Program Chair at the College of Business Ghazwan Hassna, Ph.D. His groundbreaking article, co-authored with Professor Gordon Burtch from Boston Å·ÃÀAƬ and Professor J Leon Zhao from Chinese Å·ÃÀAƬ of Hong Kong, titled "Understanding the Role of Lead Organizational Donor Types in Civic Crowdfunding," has been accepted for publication in the flagship Journal of the Association for Information Systems (JAIS).
About the Study
The study brings to light the pivotal role of lead organizational donor types in influencing the success of civic crowdfunding initiatives (a subgenre of crowdfunding wherein the crowd finances civic projects of value to communities). Notably, lead donations from non-governmental organizations (NGOs) emerge as significantly more beneficial compared to those from businesses or government entities. Hassna's research challenges the conventional view of treating endorsement sources as homogenous. The findings suggest that the signaling value of endorsements varies based on onlookers' perceptions of lead organizational donors' motivations and alignment with project objectives. The study theorizes that lead donor involvement is more likely to be perceived as credible and supportive when driven by value motives rather than strategic motives. Additionally, a natural fit or congruence between the lead donor and the project enhances perceived credibility and support potential. This research, accepted for publication in the prestigious Journal of the Association for Information Systems (JAIS), further solidifies Hassna's scholarly contributions.

Ghazwan Hassna
Hassna is an Associate Professor of Information Systems and the chair of the Business Analytics program at the College of Business Å·ÃÀAƬ. He earned his Ph.D. in Information Systems from the college of business of City Å·ÃÀAƬ of Hong Kong and his M.Sc. in management and information systems from the Å·ÃÀAƬ of Manchester. Before joining academia, Dr. Hassna had more than 10 years of experience in formulating, planning and managing large scale IT-Enabled Change Initiatives and worked in different geographies and for/with top international organizations. He is currently interested in the research areas of Generative AI, Crowdfunding and Internet Finance, Blockchain applications for business, Big Data & Analytics applications in business, smart governments, and digital transformation. His academic work has appeared in journals such as Financial Innovation, Journal of Business Venturing Insights, Electronic Commerce Research & Applications, and Perspective: Policy and Practice in Higher Education.

Gordon Burtch
Burtch is the Kelli Questrom Associate Professor of Information Systems at Boston Å·ÃÀAƬ. He has received the AIS and INFORMS ISS Early Career Awards, a Management Science best associate editor award, ISR’s best paper and best reviewer awards, and he has twice been awarded the ISR best associate editor award. Gordon’s work has appeared in several top management journals, including Management Science, Organization Science, MSOM, ISR, MIS Quarterly, and HBR. His research has received more than $2 million in funding from several major granting entities, including the NSF, European Commission, 3M, Adobe, and Meta. Gordon presently serves as an Associate Editor for ISR and Management Science.
J Leon Zhao
Zhao is Presidential Chair Professor of Information Systems, Director of Center on Blockchain and Intelligent Technology, Co-head of Information Systems and Operations Management, School of Management and Economics, Chinese Å·ÃÀAƬ of Hong Kong, Shenzhen. He holds a Ph.D. from Haas School of Business, Å·ÃÀAƬ of California at Berkeley. He was a chair professor at the City Å·ÃÀAƬ of Hong Kong and Å·ÃÀAƬ of Arizona, respectively. Dr. Zhao’s research focuses on blockchain, business intelligence, FinTech, and human-AI collaboration. He has published over three hundred research papers in journals and conference proceedings, including such journals as Management Science, Information Systems Research, MIS Quarterly, INFORMS Journal on Computing, Journal of Management Information Systems, and IEEE and ACM Transactions. He is co-editor of Financial Innovation, a Springer Open Access journal and has co-edited over 30 special issues for academic journals including MIS Quarterly, Information Systems Research, Journal of Operations Management, Decision Support Systems. Dr. Zhao has chaired over 30 conferences covering Information Systems, Service Sciences, FinTech, and Blockchain. He received an IBM Faculty Award, and a Chang Jiang Scholar Chair Professorship at Tsinghua Å·ÃÀAƬ.
